Stripe Fee Calculator

See exactly what Stripe takes from any payment — or work backwards from what you need to land in your bank.

The short answer

Formula. Fee = charge × 2.9% + $0.30 (US cards), so net = charge − fee; to receive a round net amount, charge = (net + $0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029).

Example. A $100.00 US card payment costs $3.20 in fees and nets $96.80; charging $103.30 lands exactly $100.00. Canada: 2.9% + CA$0.30 per card charge.

Surcharges apply to card payments only.

The cap applies to the percentage part of bank fees.

How the math works

Stripe's card fee has two parts: a percentage of the charge and a fixed fee per transaction. So on a $100.00 US card payment at 2.9% + 30¢, you pay $2.90 + $0.30 = $3.20 and receive $96.80. International cards add a surcharge percentage, and converting to another currency adds one more — all three stack.

The reverse direction is where most sellers lose money: you cannot get $100 net by charging $103, because the fee grows with the charge too. The correct charge is (target + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate) — $103.30 to net $100.00 on a US card. This calculator does that division exactly, to the cent, and handles the bank-transfer cap (fees like US ACH at 0.8% capped at $5 stop growing, so the reverse math changes shape above the cap — a binary search handles it, no guessing).

Bank transfers are the quiet saver: for a $2,000 US invoice, ACH at 0.8% capped at $5.00 costs $5.00 instead of $58.30 in card fees. Canadian pre-authorized debit works the same way at 1% + CA$0.40, capped at CA$5.00.

Stripe fee FAQs

What percentage does Stripe take?

2.9% + 30¢ on standard US cards; 2.9% + CA$0.30 in Canada (rates as of October 2026 — Stripe changes rates by country and over time, and volume accounts negotiate custom pricing). The calculator's rate fields are there so you can always set it to what your dashboard actually shows.

Is there a cheaper way than cards on Stripe?

Yes — bank transfers. US ACH costs 0.8% capped at $5.00; Canadian pre-authorized debit is 1% + CA$0.40 capped at CA$5.00. On anything over a few hundred dollars, the cap makes them dramatically cheaper than cards.

Do international cards really cost more?

Yes — a surcharge applies to cards issued outside your country: +1.5% in the US and +0.8% in Canada at the standard rates above, plus a further fee if the payment needs currency conversion. Check the surcharge boxes above to see the stacked total.

What about refunds and disputes?

On a refund, Stripe returns the money to the customer but keeps the processing fee. Disputed payments (chargebacks) carry a separate fee per case. Factor that in when you price small items, where the fixed 30¢ is already a big slice.
